  About Our Food

Our restaurant has no particular theme. We serve good food to suit all tastes, but you may find this information about our specialities helpful.

We are probably best known for our spicier dishes that bring our customers coming back time and again.

For example we have been cooking chilli here for thirty years to the same recipe, getting through about 100 lb. a week of prime minced beef. That works out at about 70 tons of the delicious, spicy delicacy since 1976. It must be good!

Most people enjoy it as a "Tex Mex Steak", a dish which originated here at The Gate. A chargrilled rump steak with our hot chilli, spicy jalapeno peppers, garlic butter, and a little salad. Usually served with chips or Mexican rice.

We are particularly proud of our "Cajun Blackened Steak". The blackening method was developed by the famous American chef Paul Prudhomme to capture the essence of Cajun barbecued meat in the kitchen of his New Orleans restaurant. We make up our own spice mixes and use his technique to create what some customers tell us is the best steak dish they have ever tasted!

We brush a rump steak with melted butter, sprinkle on some spice mix, and then cook in a white hot pan for about two minutes each side. The outside caramelises to a hot spicy black coating that tastes sensational, served with a drizzle of Cajun garlic butter sauce.

Because this dish is cooked authentically, the steak always tends to be rare. Any further cooking makes the blackened coating bitter. If you like your steaks well cooked, we suggest you choose another steak dish that can be chargrilled to your liking.

We use a similar method to produce our versions of Caribbean jerk dishes. The Arawak Indians were the inhabitants of Jamaica when the British arrived and used a spicy barbecue method to preserve and cook pork meat. Our adaptations use steak and chicken with a sauce flavoured with Jamaican Allspice, served with traditional “rice & peas”.

If your tastes are for plainer food or vegetarian then we have several dishes for you to choose. We also have a separate menu for our Vegan and Celiac customers.

We are also happy to serve any main course item from the bar menu priced according to our restaurant structure.

We hope you enjoy your meals.
